Interior with Dog
76 x 101 cms 1991
The property we were living on back in 1991 was near Mount Compass, SA, at the southern end of the Mount Lofty Ranges. This was my first attempt at the hills. Also, the beginning of a long struggle to paint grass. The dog is Dillon, who had looked at me, just like that, in passing. And then it took about twenty photos to get him to do it again.
I had never been a landscape painter at college - I'd always lived right in the middle of town - so I had no learnt techniques for hills or grass, or even sky. Also, having used housepaint on purpose to create absolutely flat, interlocking shapes, I continued to use oil paint in the same way, using the graded colours of a tiled floor to create the illusion of space.
I have since realised that, apart from one very good tutor during my first 2 years of college, I don't have a lot of simple straightforward knowledge to show for my 5 years. We had never been taught perspective or even basic stuff like how to stretch a canvas properly.
**There is a comparison of my treatment of the Mount Lofty Ranges on the Compare Hills Page.
