Many years ago I became obsessed with people jogging and running, so I went off to photograph fun runs, etc but it didn't work - the runners kept turning and smiling at me, or sticking out their chests and posing. A lot of them ended up in Joggers No 2.
I had also subscribed to the magazine Track and Field and the first painting from that series was Women Running. However, I also found a photograph of a man running a cross-country race, which was outstanding amongst the hundreds of other images I accumulated, so I have used it twice.
The landscape behind the first painting is of the foothills at the south-western end of the Mount Lofty Ranges, close to Goolwa in S Australia, while the landscape behind the second is across the top of the north-eastern end of the same hills, close to Mannum. The rocks really are covered in graffiti. In 2013 a proposal was made to cover those hills with a wind farm.
