Port Germein can be approached by heading north 27 km from Port Pirie or west along the spectacular Port Germein Gorge Road, a left turn just past Murray Town, passing the Bangor ruins and driving between towering rock formations.
Port Germein is a lovely little seaside town. It has sufficient amenities to make it a delightful place to visit or live, while the jetty is a peaceful evening stroll over the wide shallow waters of the edge of Spencer Gulf, out to water deep enough for ships to load grain back in the 1880's.
It is surrounded by history, dating back thousands of years to where aboriginal settlements in the lee of the ranges are still marked by ancient trees , hollowed by the aborigines' fires, vigilant in an overgrown paddock. There is a stone marking the site of an aboriginal church which briefly existed, from 1927 - 1935. There are vineyards close by.
